The air in the alleyway still tasted of stale urine and regret, but for me, it was now laced with something far more potent: the bitter tang of betrayal. Seajay’s words, a desperate whisper against the roar of the city, replayed in my mind, each syllable a fresh stab. “It’s the only way, Romero. Rayan… he’ll kill us both.” The trap had been sprung, and I’d walked right into it, a lamb to the slaughter, all because I’d believed in the scent of jasmine, in the shadows in her eyes, in the promise of her bloom.

My body screamed in protest with every movement, a symphony of bruises and torn flesh. The concrete had been a cruel mistress, but Rayan’s men had been more so. They’d left me for dead, a discarded plaything, a testament to their master’s ruthlessness. But they’d underestimated me. They’d underestimated the fire that Seajay’s betrayal had ignited within me. It wasn’t just pain that fueled me now; it was a burning need for answers, for justice.

I stumbled out of the alley, the weak dawn light an unwelcome assault on my battered eyes. The city, usually a vibrant tapestry of life, seemed to hold its breath, a silent accomplice to the darkness that had enveloped me. My car was long gone, taken by the thugs, but I didn’t care. I hailed the first taxi I saw, my voice raspy, barely a whisper. “The Blackheart Gallery. And step on it.”
