The stale air of the interrogation room clung to me like a shroud. It had been days since the alley, days since the cold of the concrete had seeped into my bones and the taste of betrayal had soured my tongue. They called it recovery. I called it a slow, agonizing descent into a reality I no longer recognized. The police, bless their diligent hearts, had found me. A broken mess, barely clinging to consciousness, but alive. And now, they were asking questions. Questions I didn’t have the answers to, or rather, questions I was afraid to answer.

Detective Miller, a man whose weary eyes had seen too much and whose patience was clearly wearing thin, sat across from me. The single bulb overhead cast harsh shadows, making his face a landscape of fatigue and skepticism. “Mr. Valentin,” he began, his voice a low rumble, “we’ve been over this. You were found… incapacitated. We need to know who did this to you. And more importantly, why.”

I traced the rim of the plastic cup of lukewarm water. “I told you,” I rasped, my throat still raw from the ordeal. “It was… a misunderstanding.”
