The scent of simmering root vegetables, a fragrance so thin it was almost a memory itself, wound its way through the small, drafty room. Elara watched Kael and Lyra, their faces illuminated by the dim lamplight, their small hands busy arranging the meager offerings on the rough wooden table. A single, slightly bruised apple, a handful of dried berries, and the steaming pot of stew. It was a feast, by their current reckoning, a celebration of another day survived. But for Elara, it was a fragile scaffolding built over a chasm of ‘what ifs’ and ‘if onlys.’

She traced the worn grain of the table with a fingertip, a familiar gesture of quiet worry. Her gaze drifted from Lyra, who was humming a tuneless melody as she polished the apple with the hem of her skirt, to Kael, who was meticulously placing the berries in a pattern that mimicked the constellations he’d seen in Old Man Hemlock’s sky charts. He’d always been drawn to the vastness above, a stark contrast to the earthbound realities of their lives.

“It looks beautiful, Elara,” Lyra said, her voice a soft chime. She held up the apple, its skin now gleaming faintly.
