Lyra traced a line in the damp earth with a twig, her brow furrowed in concentration. The last of the daylight, thin and watery, cast long shadows across their small, cleared patch of ground. Around her, Elara was meticulously arranging their meager provisions for the evening meal, her movements precise and economical, each gesture a testament to a practiced scarcity. Kael, ever the restless spirit, was attempting to coax a reluctant spark from a pile of dry twigs, his breath puffing out in small clouds of white.

Lyra’s twig scratched against a pebble, a small, sharp sound that made her flinch. She looked down at the pattern emerging beneath her fingers. It wasn't a flower, not like the ones she remembered from the market stalls that used to line the town square, their petals like vibrant stained glass. This was a tangle of sharp angles, dark, swirling shapes that seemed to claw at the edges of the dirt. A faint shiver ran down her spine, a familiar echo of something unsettled, something she couldn’t quite name.

She scraped her palm over the drawing, smoothing the earth until it was blank again, a fresh canvas for whatever fleeting thought might emerge. It was easier this way, to erase before it could take root, before the images could solidify and demand to be understood. But the shapes lingered behind her eyes, a persistent murmur beneath the surface of her awareness.
