Chapter 6
The Shared Plate
The meal begins. The act of sharing, even little, is significant. Describe the food – simple, perhaps stew or bread – and its symbolic weight.
The air in the small, sparsely furnished room was thick with anticipation, a tangible thing that settled over them like a warm blanket. Elara, her fingers still stained with the earth from the garden, carefully placed the wooden bowls onto the rough-hewn table. Each one was chipped, a testament to many years of use, but they were clean, wiped down with a damp cloth that smelled faintly of woodsmoke and dried herbs. Kael, his eyes wide and shining, brought over the loaf of bread, its crust a deep, satisfying brown, broken into generous, uneven pieces. Lyra, her small hands still clutching a smooth, grey pebble she’d found earlier, watched Elara with an intensity that always made Elara’s heart ache a little. Old Man Hemlock sat in his usual corner, his presence a quiet anchor, his gaze steady and knowing.
The centerpiece of their humble feast was a pot of thick, hearty stew. It wasn't the rich, savory fare of Christmases past, the ones Elara could still conjure with startling clarity – the roasted fowl, the glistening gravy, the sweet, spiced apples. This was a stew born of necessity, of what the earth and their meager stores could provide. Potatoes, softened to a creamy tenderness, mingled with leeks foraged from the damp verges of the forest, and a handful of dried beans that had been painstakingly rationed. A sprig of thyme, plucked from the windowsill herb garden, lent its fragrant whisper to the earthy broth. It was simple, yes, but tonight, it felt like a king’s banquet.
Elara ladled the stew into the bowls, ensuring each received a fair share. The steam rose in fragrant clouds, carrying with it the scent of survival, of sustenance, of a moment stolen from the relentless march of hardship. She passed Kael’s bowl, then Lyra’s, her younger siblings’ faces alight with a joy that was both fragile and fierce. Kael immediately reached for a piece of bread, tearing off a chunk and dipping it into the steaming liquid. Lyra, after a moment’s hesitation, followed suit, her small fingers delicate as she maneuvered the bread.
