The air in the small, shared room was thick with anticipation, a fragile scent woven from woodsmoke, damp earth, and the faint, sweet aroma of the stew simmering over the low fire. Elara stirred the pot with a wooden spoon, her eyes, usually sharp and watchful, softened by the gentle heat. Beside her, Kael traced patterns in the condensation on the single windowpane, his brow furrowed in concentration. Lyra, perched on a low stool, her tiny fingers busy braiding a length of dried grass, hummed a tuneless melody. They were waiting. Waiting for Old Man Hemlock, and waiting for the meal that was more than just food; it was a promise, a brief, shining defiance against the gnawing emptiness that had become their constant companion.

The stew was a humble affair, a medley of root vegetables unearthed from Hemlock’s carefully guarded patch, a few foraged mushrooms, and a precious sliver of dried meat. But to the children, it was a feast. The very act of preparing it, the ritual of gathering, chopping, and stirring, felt like a secret ceremony, a reclaiming of something lost.

It was the scent of thyme, and suddenly, she wasn’t in their dim room anymore. She was standing in a sun-drenched kitchen, twelve years ago, her mother’s hands, flour-dusted and warm, crushing fresh thyme between her fingers. Her mother’s laugh, a melody Elara hadn’t truly heard in so long, echoed in the phantom space. She saw the worn wooden table, laden with platters, the flickering candlelight, the faces of her family, all gathered, all whole. A pang, sharp and sudden, tightened her chest. She blinked, shaking her head, the scent receding, leaving only the ghost of warmth and the sting of tears.
