Chapter 4
Old Man Hemlock's Watch
Introduce Hemlock, the gruff but kind guardian. He observes the children, a silent protector who understands their plight. Hint at his own past hardships.
Old Man Hemlock watched from the edge of the sparse woods, his silhouette blending with the gnarled branches that clawed at the bruised evening sky. The children, Elara, Kael, and Lyra, were gathered around a small, sputtering fire in the clearing. Their laughter, thin and reedy like the wind whistling through the skeletal trees, reached him, a sound he cherished even as it pricked at his own weathered heart. He’d seen too many good years fade into memory, too many bright sparks extinguished by the relentless march of time and hardship.
He remembered his own Christmases, twelve years ago and more, feasts that seemed to stretch into infinity, filled with the boisterous joy of a family long gone. Now, the children’s Christmas was a meager stew, a few scavenged roots, and a precious handful of dried berries Elara had managed to trade for. It was a far cry from the roasted goose and plum pudding of his youth, a stark reminder of what had been lost, not just for him, but for them, too.
Elara, her young face etched with a weariness that didn't belong on a child, stirred the pot. Her movements were precise, economical, each gesture carrying the weight of responsibility. She was their anchor, Hemlock knew, the one who kept their small world from spinning entirely off its axis. He saw the way she smoothed Kael’s unruly hair, the gentle way she coaxed Lyra to eat just a little more. Her protectiveness was a fierce, quiet flame, burning against the encroaching dark.
