Chapter 20
The Enduring Flame
As they prepare for sleep, the children carry the warmth of the meal within them. They face the night, and the future, together, their bond a quiet flame.
The last embers of the fire in their small hearth pulsed with a gentle, fading light, mirroring the slow descent of the children into sleep. The lingering aroma of their simple meal, a fragrant ghost of potatoes and herbs, still clung to the air, a comforting presence in the quiet room. Elara, nestled between Kael and Lyra on their straw-filled mattress, felt a warmth spread through her, not just from the food, but from the shared moments that had unfolded like petals from a tightly furled bud. The hunger that often gnawed at her was, for this night at least, appeased, replaced by a different kind of fullness – the quiet satisfaction of connection.
Kael, his breathing already deep and even, stirred beside her, a soft sigh escaping his lips. Elara gently smoothed his hair, the rough texture a familiar comfort. She wondered what dreams were already weaving themselves behind his closed eyelids, dreams perhaps of flying, or of endless fields of plump berries, the kind she remembered their mother describing. She hoped they were happy dreams, untroubled by the gnawing reality of their days.
Lyra, smaller and lighter, was curled into Elara’s side, her small hand tucked into Elara’s. Even in sleep, Lyra’s brow was often furrowed, a habit born of her sensitive nature, her quiet way of absorbing the world’s harsh edges. Elara wished she could shield her completely, could build a wall of warmth and light around her that would keep all shadows at bay. But she knew, with a certainty that settled heavy in her chest, that such a wall was impossible. Life, as Old Man Hemlock often said, was more like a river – you could try to steer, but you couldn’t stop the current.
