The last spoonful of stew had been savored, the last crumbs of bread licked from the wooden plates. A quiet settled over the small group, a comfortable silence that had grown between them like the moss on the stones outside. Elara, her heart a little lighter than it had been in days, rose from the table. “Come,” she said, her voice soft, but with a new steadiness. “Let’s go outside.”

Kael was already on his feet, his eyes bright with anticipation. He reached for Lyra’s hand, pulling her gently from her seat. Lyra, her gaze still distant, followed, her small fingers finding Kael’s. Old Man Hemlock pushed himself up from his stool, his joints creaking a little, a familiar, reassuring sound. He met Elara’s eyes, a silent question passing between them. She nodded, a small, almost imperceptible movement.

They stepped out into the cool night air, the scent of damp earth and pine needles filling their lungs. Above them, the sky was a vast, inky canvas, dusted with a million tiny, shimmering stars. And there, hanging in the darkness, was the moon. Tonight, it was full, a luminous disc that cast a pale, ethereal glow over the landscape. It looked, Elara thought, like a giant, watchful eye, observing their small corner of the world. It was a hungry moon, a moon that remembered.
