Kael sat by the hearth, his chin propped on his knees, his eyes fixed on the dancing flames. He was tracing patterns in the soot on the stones, his brow furrowed in concentration. Lyra, her small form curled on a pile of straw, was sketching in the dirt with a twig, her tongue poking out as she focused. Old Man Hemlock sat in his usual corner, his gaze distant, yet ever watchful. He was a silent sentinel, a living testament to the harsh beauty of survival.
“It smells good, Elara,” Kael said, his voice a soft murmur that barely disturbed the quiet. He looked up, his eyes bright with anticipation. “Is it… is it the stew from last year?”
