The last embers of the fire pulsed a soft, orange glow against the rough-hewn walls of their small dwelling. Outside, the moon, a pale sliver tonight, hung like a forgotten promise in the vast, inky canvas of the sky. Inside, a quiet settled over Elara, Kael, and Lyra, a comfortable quiet born not of absence, but of shared presence. Old Man Hemlock had already retired to his own corner of the world, his gruff snores a familiar rhythm in the night. The scent of the simple stew, a rare treat that had filled their bellies and warmed their hearts, still lingered, a gentle ghost of contentment.

Elara watched Kael trace patterns on the dusty floor with his finger, his brow furrowed in concentration. Lyra, nestled beside her, was already drifting, her small breaths soft and even. Elara felt a familiar ache, a quiet thrum of responsibility that had become as much a part of her as her own heartbeat. She looked at Kael, at the way his eyes, even in the dim light, seemed to hold a spark of something brighter, something that refused to be extinguished.

“What are you thinking about, Kael?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
