The stew, a humble concoction of root vegetables and whatever meager scraps they’d managed to find, simmered in the pot. Its aroma, usually a comforting promise of warmth, today felt different. It was laced with the ghosts of richer meals, with the phantom scent of roasted goose and spiced apples. Elara stirred the pot, her gaze fixed on the swirling depths as if searching for answers in the steam. Twelve years. Twelve Christmases had passed since the last one, a feast that now felt like a dream spun from sunlight and sugar. That memory, so vivid and yet so impossibly distant, was a constant ache beneath the surface of their present reality.

Kael, ever the optimist, hummed a tune that was more a collection of happy sounds than a recognizable melody. He was tracing patterns on the dusty floor with a twig, his brow furrowed in concentration. Lyra sat beside him, her small hands clasped, her eyes wide and reflecting the flickering lamplight. She hadn’t drawn anything for days, her usual urge to capture the world on paper silenced by a quiet apprehension that seemed to settle over them all like a fine layer of dust. Old Man Hemlock sat by the hearth, his gnarled hands resting on his knees, his gaze steady and observant. He’d seen many seasons come and go, many hungers gnaw, and he understood the delicate balance between remembering and succumbing to the past.

“It smells good, Elara,” Kael chirped, his voice bright, trying to pierce the subdued atmosphere.
