Chapter 13
Laughter at the Table
A moment of genuine, unforced laughter breaks through. It might be a silly story, a shared observation, a brief return to childlike innocence.
The stew, a humble offering of root vegetables and a scant piece of dried meat, simmered gently in the cast-iron pot. Its aroma, usually a beacon of comfort, today seemed to hang heavier in the air, thick with the unspoken weight of memories. Elara stirred it with a wooden spoon, her movements slow and deliberate. Beside her, Kael meticulously arranged the few pieces of coarse bread on a chipped enamel plate, his brow furrowed in concentration as if he were setting a feast table. Lyra sat nearby, her small hands tracing patterns in the condensation on the windowpane, her gaze lost somewhere beyond the grey sky.
Old Man Hemlock watched them from his usual spot by the hearth, his gnarled hands clasped over his walking stick. He saw the familiar flicker of wistfulness in Elara’s eyes, the forced cheerfulness in Kael’s meticulousness, and the quiet withdrawal in Lyra. He knew this meal, like so many others, was more than just sustenance. It was a fragile bridge between the gnawing present and the sun-drenched memories of a time that felt both impossibly close and irrevocably lost.
“It smells good, Elara,” Kael said, his voice a little too bright. He looked at her, his blue eyes earnest. “Just like… like the Christmas stew Mama used to make.”
