Chapter 12
A Song in the Quiet
Elara, moved by Kael's hope, hums or sings a fragment of a forgotten lullaby or carol, a fragile bridge between past joy and present comfort.
The air in the small room was thick with the scent of simmering broth, a fragrance so thin it could barely be called a scent at all, yet it was more than enough to stir something deep within Elara. She watched Kael, his face alight with a hopeful glow as he carefully stirred the meager pot, his small spoon scraping against the metal with a sound that was both familiar and new. It was a sound that spoke of their present, of making do, of finding sustenance where there was little to be had. But tonight, it also felt like a promise, a quiet whisper that perhaps, just perhaps, things could be a little brighter.
Twelve years. The number hung in the air, a ghost of Christmases past, of feasts that had overflowed, of laughter that had echoed like bells. That memory, the one of a table groaning under the weight of roasted meats and glistening pastries, of the warm press of her parents’ hands, felt like a dream conjured from a different life. It was a stark, painful contrast to the thin broth and the single, hard loaf of bread that would form their meal tonight. Lyra, nestled in the corner, her fingers tracing invisible patterns on the rough wooden floor, seemed to feel it too, her small shoulders hunched as if against an invisible chill.
Old Man Hemlock sat by the hearth, his gaze fixed on the dying embers, his silence a heavy cloak. He had seen too many Christmases come and go, too many hungry moons rise and fall. Elara knew he carried his own weight of remembrance, a burden she couldn’t even begin to fathom. He had shared stories of resilience, of enduring the impossible, but tonight, the weight of the past felt particularly heavy.
