The air in their small dwelling, usually thick with the scent of damp earth and woodsmoke, now carried a lighter, more hopeful fragrance. It was the aroma of boiled potatoes, a rare and precious offering, mingling with the faint, almost forgotten sweetness of dried apples. Elara watched Kael, his face alight with an almost impossible joy, as he stirred the pot with a carved wooden spoon. His small hands, usually stained with dirt from his explorations, were clean for the occasion, his eyes bright with anticipation. Lyra sat beside him, her small fingers tracing patterns in the dust on the floor, her usual quietude a gentle hum rather than a silence.

“Almost ready, Elara,” Kael announced, his voice a melody of excitement. “Old Man Hemlock said the moon would be high enough by now. He said it watches, you know. Like it remembers everything.”

Elara managed a smile, a fragile thing that felt as if it might shatter with too much force. She remembered her mother saying the same, her voice soft as she pointed to the moon, a silver coin in the velvet sky. That was twelve Christmases ago, a lifetime it seemed, a time when the hearth had blazed and laughter had spilled out into the snow-laden night. The memory was a sharp, beautiful ache in her chest, a constant companion to the gnawing emptiness of their present.
