The air in the small, shared room was thick with the scent of simmering root vegetables and a faint undercurrent of woodsmoke, a comforting aroma that clung to their worn clothes like a second skin. Outside, the wind had begun to howl, a mournful sound that seemed to echo the emptiness they often felt in their bellies. But tonight, there was a different kind of fullness gathering, a quiet anticipation that settled around Elara, Kael, and Lyra like a warm blanket. Old Man Hemlock sat by the hearth, his gnarled hands tending to the meager flames, his face a roadmap of weathered lines etched by sun and sorrow.

“It’s almost ready,” Elara said softly, stirring the pot with a wooden spoon that had seen better days. Her gaze flickered to Kael, who was meticulously arranging a few dried berries on a chipped ceramic shard, his brow furrowed in concentration. Lyra, her chin resting on her knees, watched the dancing flames, her eyes wide and unblinking.

Hemlock let out a low rumble, a sound that was more sigh than speech. “Tonight, children,” he began, his voice raspy like dried leaves, “we eat. And before we do, I have a story for you. Not of sorrow, mind you. But of a time when things were… much like they are now, for some. And how they found their way.”
