The air in Oakhaven had turned brittle, like dried leaves ready to shatter. Elara felt it in her bones, a chill that had nothing to do with the encroaching autumn. It had begun subtly, a whisper of unease that had grown into a persistent hum beneath the surface of everyday life. The baker’s loaves were a shade paler, the laughter in the tavern lacked its usual warmth, and the familiar, comforting rhythm of the town felt… off. She tried to dismiss it, to attribute it to the lingering ache in her chest, the hollow space Julian had left behind. But the feeling persisted, a persistent shadow stretching across the sunlit days.

It was on such a day, while gathering herbs from the edge of the Whispering Woods, that she first saw him. As she approached, her basket laden with rosemary and thyme, he didn't move. His eyes, the color of a stormy sea, finally met hers, and a jolt, not entirely unpleasant, ran through her. There was a familiarity to them, a depth that hinted at unspoken stories. But it was the aura that surrounded him, a palpable sense of danger coiled beneath a veneer of control, that truly set her on edge.
