The scent of aged paper and forgotten stories clung to Elara like a second skin. The town archives, a cramped, dusty room tucked away behind the baker’s shop, was her sanctuary now. Elder Maeve had pointed her here, her eyes, usually so full of warmth, now holding a flicker of urgency that Elara couldn’t quite decipher. "The past has a way of whispering to those who listen, child," she’d said, her voice a low murmur. And Elara, her heart still a raw ache where Julian had once resided, was listening with every fiber of her being.
She traced the brittle edges of a faded ledger, the ink bled into illegible swirls.
