Chapter 6
The Elder's Counsel
Seeking answers, Elara confides in Elder Maeve. The wise woman offers cryptic advice, hinting at ancient lore and hidden dangers, urging Elara to look beyond her grief.
The silence of her small room felt like a shroud, heavy and suffocating. Elara traced the worn patterns on her quilt, each thread a reminder of the days before Julian, before the gaping emptiness that had taken root in her chest. The laughter that once echoed through her home had faded, replaced by the mournful sigh of the wind against the eaves. Sleep offered little respite, haunted by fragmented dreams of Julian’s smile, his whispered promises, and then, the stark, chilling void of his absence. The strange happenings in the town – the wilting crops, the unsettling whispers in the marketplace, the way the very air seemed to hold its breath – only amplified her gnawing unease. She knew, with a certainty that defied logic, that Julian’s vanishing act was intertwined with this creeping darkness. But how? And why?
Desperation, a cold, sharp thing, finally nudged her from her sorrow. She needed answers, and there was only one person in the village who might possess them, one person whose wisdom was as deep and ancient as the roots of the oldest oak. Elder Maeve.
Elara found her in her usual spot by the hearth, the afternoon sun dappling her wrinkled face as she mended a tattered shawl. The scent of dried herbs and woodsmoke clung to the air, a comforting, familiar aroma. Maeve’s eyes, the colour of a stormy sea, met Elara’s as she entered, a knowing glint within them. There was no need for elaborate introductions, no preamble to explain the turmoil that had brought Elara to her doorstep.
