Unease in the Air

Strange, unsettling events begin to plague Elara's town. Objects move inexplicably, shadows lengthen unnaturally, and a palpable sense of dread settles over the community.

The morning sun, once a cheerful beacon, now seemed to cast longer, more menacing shadows across the cobblestone streets of Oakhaven. Elara, stirring from a restless sleep, felt it immediately – a subtle shift in the air, a disquiet that had seeped into the very foundations of her home. It was the kind of unease that clung to the back of your throat, a phantom chill that had nothing to do with the season.

She padded to the window, her bare feet silent on the cool wooden floorboards. The familiar sight of the marketplace, usually bustling with early risers and the clatter of carts, was strangely subdued. A few vendors were already setting up their stalls, their movements slow, their faces etched with a shared, unspoken worry. Yesterday, a basket of ripe apples had tumbled from a merchant’s cart, scattering across the stones with a sound that had echoed through the sudden hush of the square. Today, it was a stack of freshly baked bread that had inexplicably toppled from Martha the baker’s cooling rack, loaves rolling and tumbling like bewildered dough-men.

It was small things, perhaps, easily dismissed as accidents. But the frequency, the sheer oddity of them, was beginning to fray the edges of Oakhaven’s placid existence. Elara remembered Julian’s smile, the way his eyes, the colour of a stormy sea, would crinkle at the corners when he spoke of the world beyond their quiet valley. He had a way of seeing the extraordinary in the mundane, of finding wonder in the smallest of things. Now, even the mundane felt… off.
