The air in the small, sun-drenched courtyard had thickened, the vibrant scent of jasmine suddenly tinged with something sharp and metallic, like an unpolished needle. Elara traced the rim of her teacup, the ceramic cool against her fingertips, a stark contrast to the heat building in her chest. Liam sat opposite her, his usual easy posture now a little too rigid, his gaze fixed on a point somewhere beyond her shoulder. The laughter that had filled this space just hours before, light and effervescent as the local wine, seemed a distant memory, a ghost of a melody.

But it was when Liam, trying to illustrate his point, had gestured with a sweep of his hand, his words laced with a well-meaning but misguided comparison, that the real fracture had begun. “It’s like… you’re living in a beautiful, timeless painting, Elara,” he’d said, his eyes earnest. “And I’m in a constantly evolving film reel. Both have their beauty, of course, but the pace… the sheer volume of life unfolding… it’s just… *more*.”
