The scent of drying herbs, a familiar comfort woven into the very fabric of her home, seemed to cling to Elara’s clothes even as she walked the cobbled paths of the exchange center. It was a scent that spoke of roots, of soil, of a life meticulously cultivated within the embrace of her village. Yet, lately, that familiar aroma felt less like a blanket and more like a tether. Liam’s laughter, a sound as bright and unpredictable as a city dawn, had a way of loosening those threads, of making her gaze drift towards horizons she’d only glimpsed in the faded pages of borrowed books.
She found him in the courtyard, his sketchbook open on his lap, his brow furrowed in concentration. Sunlight caught the dust motes dancing around him, illuminating the intensity in his eyes as he captured the intricate pattern of a wrought-iron railing. He looked up as she approached, his smile easy, a familiar warmth spreading through her.
