The scent of woodsmoke and damp earth, so familiar it was woven into the very fabric of Elara’s being, seemed to cling a little tighter today, a comforting shroud against the unsettling whispers that had begun to drift through the village. It was Elder Maeve’s voice, usually a steady cadence like the river over smooth stones, that carried the sharpest edge of concern. They sat by the hearth, the late afternoon sun slanting through the small window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air, each one a tiny world unto itself, much like the people who inhabited them.

“He is… different, Elara,” Maeve said, her hands busy with mending a worn tunic, the needle a blur of motion. Her brow was furrowed, a map of worries etched deep. “His ways are not our ways. The city, it breeds a different kind of spirit.”

Elara traced the rim of her clay mug, the warmth seeping into her fingertips. She understood her mother’s caution. The village of Oakhaven was a sanctuary, its traditions a sturdy oak providing shelter and belonging. Liam, with his city’s clamor and his artist’s soul, was a wild vine, beautiful and intriguing, but undeniably foreign. “He is kind, Mother. And he listens.”
