The air in the small café, usually a comforting blend of roasted beans and warm pastries, felt a little thinner today. Elara traced the rim of her mug, the ceramic cool beneath her fingertips, and watched Liam sketch in his worn notebook. Sunlight, dappled through the leaves of the ancient oak outside, painted shifting patterns on the tabletop, on Liam’s intent face, and on the quick, sure lines emerging from his charcoal. They were in this neutral space, a city neither of them called home, a place cobbled together from shared experiences and stolen moments. Yet, even here, the subtle currents of their separate worlds tugged at them.
Liam looked up, his eyes, the color of a stormy sea, met hers. A faint smile touched his lips. "Lost in thought?" he asked, his voice a low rumble that always seemed to settle something within her.
Elara offered a small smile in return. "Just… observing." She gestured vaguely towards the window. "The way the light falls. It’s different here, from home."
