The train pulled into the station with a sigh of tired metal, a sound that Elara found strangely comforting amidst the cacophony of the city. Liam was there, a beacon of familiar warmth in the swirling, unfamiliar currents. His smile, a little wider than usual, reached his eyes, and for a moment, the vastness of the station, the rush of people, the very air thick with the scent of exhaust and a hundred different perfumes, seemed to recede.

“You made it,” he said, his voice a low rumble against the din. He reached for her bag, his fingers brushing hers, a jolt of electricity that was both startling and welcome.

“I did,” Elara replied, her own voice a little breathless. She looked around, her eyes wide, trying to absorb everything at once. The soaring glass ceilings, the streams of people moving with purpose, the advertisements flashing across enormous screens – it was a world away from the quiet lanes of her village.
