Chapter 9
A Misunderstanding Brews
An unresolved issue from Liam's past, perhaps related to his wife or his grief, creates a rift. Elara feels a distance growing, testing her patience and understanding.
The scent of honeysuckle, usually a comforting herald of summer’s embrace, felt heavy in the air, thick with unspoken words. Elara found herself watching Liam from across the kitchen table, a peculiar distance having settled between them like a fine mist. It had started subtly, a series of small things that, when pieced together, formed a pattern she couldn’t quite decipher. But the silence now pressed in, amplifying the unease thrumming beneath her skin. Liam was meticulously drying dishes, his movements precise, almost mechanical. He hadn’t asked about her day, hadn’t shared any of his own. It was a stark contrast to the easy companionship that had blossomed between them over the past few weeks, a companionship Elara had begun to cherish as much as the children’s bright smiles.
“Liam?” she began, her voice softer than she intended.
