The autumn air in Oakhaven carried a scent of fallen leaves and woodsmoke, a comforting perfume that Elara had come to associate with a sense of peace. She sat on the porch swing, a mug of chamomile tea warming her hands, watching Lily and Tom chase each other across the lawn, their laughter a bright melody against the deepening afternoon sky. It had been months since she’d arrived, months of quiet days and gradual awakenings. The initial awkwardness had softened, replaced by a comfortable rhythm that felt, to Elara’s hopeful heart, very much like home.

Liam emerged from the house, his movements a familiar grace, a slight weariness etched around his kind eyes. He paused, leaning against the doorframe, a soft smile gracing his lips as he observed the children. Elara felt a familiar warmth bloom in her chest, a tender appreciation for this man who had cautiously, tentatively, opened his life and his heart to her. He joined her on the swing, their shoulders brushing, a silent acknowledgment of the unspoken connection that had grown between them.

“They’ve got endless energy today,” Liam murmured, his gaze still fixed on his children.
