The scent of freshly baked bread, a comforting hug from the universe, wafted through Elara’s open kitchen window. It was a small thing, this scent, yet it settled deep within her, a quiet promise of normalcy, of hearth and home. She watched Liam’s children, Lily and Tom, chase a sunbeam across the worn wooden floorboards, their laughter a melody she’d only dared to hum in her quietest moments. Today felt different. Elara felt a fierce protectiveness rise within her, a silent vow to shield them from any further hurt.
