Elara begins to spend time with Lily and Tom. Her inherent kindness and patience slowly break through their initial withdrawal, planting seeds of trust and affection.
The scent of freshly baked bread, warm and comforting, always filled Elara’s small cottage on Saturday mornings. It was a ritual, a small anchor in the gentle ebb and flow of her new life in Oakhaven. Today, however, the aroma was tinged with a new kind of anticipation, a fluttery nervousness that settled in her chest like a flock of startled birds. Liam had asked if she’d be willing to spend the afternoon with Lily and Tom, a tentative step towards something more, something that felt both fragile and profoundly hopeful.
She’d readily agreed, her heart leaping at the prospect. The children had been polite, quiet observers during their brief encounters at the farmer’s market or when Liam had stopped by her cottage, but Elara sensed a deep well of unexpressed emotion beneath their shy smiles. She wanted to reach it, to offer a steady hand and a listening ear.
As midday approached, Elara arranged the picnic basket with meticulous care. Sandwiches cut into neat triangles, juicy strawberries, a flask of lemonade, and a small bag of cookies Liam had mentioned were their favorites. She’d even packed a worn copy of ‘The Velveteen Rabbit,’ a children’s classic that had always held a special place in her heart.
