The scent of freshly baked bread, a comforting aroma that had become synonymous with their little cottage, filled the air. Sunlight streamed through the kitchen window, casting a warm, golden glow on the worn wooden table where Elara, Liam, Lily, and Tom were gathered. It was a scene plucked straight from the pages of Elara’s most cherished daydreams, a tableau of domestic bliss she had once believed was forever out of reach. Lily, her small hands dusted with flour, giggled as she helped Elara knead dough, her earlier reticence having melted away like snow under a spring sun. Tom, his face smeared with jam from a hastily prepared breakfast, was already engrossed in a drawing, his tongue poking out in concentration. Liam watched them all, a soft smile gracing his lips, a smile that had become more frequent, more genuine, with each passing day.

“This is the best bread, Elara,” Lily declared, her voice bright and clear. “It smells like Grandma’s hugs.”

Elara’s heart swelled at the comparison. She had worked hard to create an atmosphere of warmth and security, to fill the spaces left by loss with a new kind of love, one that was gentle and steady. “Thank you, sweetie. We’re making it together, remember?” She winked at Liam, who caught her eye across the table.
