The late afternoon sun slanted through the kitchen window, casting long, golden stripes across the worn oak table. Elara hummed softly, a gentle melody that had become a familiar soundtrack to the quiet rhythm of their days. She was peeling apples for a pie, the sweet, crisp scent filling the air, a comforting aroma that spoke of home and belonging. Lily sat at the table, her small fingers carefully arranging a collection of smooth, grey stones, her brow furrowed in concentration. Tom was outside, his boisterous laughter occasionally drifting in through the open door, a sound that still, after all this time, brought a pang of bittersweet joy to Elara’s heart.

Liam had taken the afternoon off, a rare occurrence that had sent a ripple of quiet anticipation through the house. He’d said he had something important to discuss, something he needed to clear the air about. Elara’s own heart had fluttered with a mixture of hope and apprehension. She knew, instinctively, that this conversation was about them, about the fragile, beautiful future they were tentatively building. She also knew it was about the past, a past that had cast a long shadow over Liam, and by extension, over their burgeoning family.

When he walked in, the golden light caught the silver threads in his dark hair, softening the lines of weariness that often etched themselves around his eyes. He carried a small, worn leather-bound book, its pages yellowed with age. He didn’t smile immediately, but his gaze, when it met hers, held a depth of emotion that made her breath catch.
