Tom's Playful Deflection

Tom, a whirlwind of boundless energy, seemed to sense it before anyone else. The hushed conversations, the lingering glances between Elara and his father, the subtle shift in the atmosphere of their little cottage – it all registered with the keen, unvarnished perception of a child. He didn’t have the words for the nascent feelings blooming between Elara and Liam, or the quiet contemplation that had settled over Lily, but he understood the *change*. And Tom, in his own uniquely boisterous way, had a knack for deflecting anything that made him feel even a flicker of unease.
He’d been building a magnificent fortress out of sofa cushions and blankets in the living room, a sprawling kingdom where brave knights (himself, naturally) defended against imaginary dragons. Lily, usually content to observe from the periphery, had been perched on the armchair, a book open in her lap, though her eyes weren’t quite tracing the words. The air between Elara and Liam, who were tidying up the kitchen after dinner, was thick with unspoken things, a comfortable silence that nonetheless hummed with a new intimacy.
Then, Tom’s fortress was suddenly under siege. Not by a dragon, but by a flurry of toy dinosaurs. A T-Rex, its plastic jaws agape, was making a valiant attempt to topple a strategically placed cushion. “Roar!” Tom bellowed, his voice echoing through the room. “Get out of my castle, you prehistoric beasts! You’ll never defeat Sir Reginald!”
