Lily, a creature of quiet observation, felt the shift in the air long before it solidified into anything tangible. It was a subtle tremor, a dissonance that vibrated beneath the surface of their everyday lives. She’d watched Elara’s smile, once as bright and easy as a summer morning, become a little tighter, a little more rehearsed. She’d seen her father’s brow furrowed in thought, his usual easygoing demeanor replaced by a guarded stillness. The laughter that had begun to bloom in their little house, a fragile flower Elara had coaxed into existence, seemed to be wilting under an unseen frost.

She sat on the worn rug in the living room, her knees drawn up to her chest, a half-finished drawing of a rainbow spread before her. The crayons lay scattered, their vibrant colors muted by the afternoon light filtering through the lace curtains. Tom was outside, his boisterous shouts a welcome, if sometimes jarring, interruption to the hushed atmosphere. He was oblivious, lost in the world of imaginary dragons and daring rescues, a world where sadness couldn’t touch him. Lily, however, was acutely aware.

She’d seen Elara in the kitchen earlier, her back to the room, her shoulders hunched as she stared out the window. The clatter of dishes had been too loud, too sharp, a sound that spoke of frustration rather than domestic harmony. Then, Liam had entered, his voice low and steady, but Lily, from her perch on the stairs, had heard the undercurrent of tension, the careful avoidance of certain words, the way their eyes met and then quickly darted away. It was a language she was beginning to understand, a silent conversation of hurt and misunderstanding.
