The weight of the ledger pressed against Sarah’s chest, a physical manifestation of the rot she suspected festered beneath the polished veneer of the school district. Chapter five had ended with her fingers tracing the spidery script detailing transactions that made no sense, numbers that danced and swayed like drunken sailors. Now, in the sterile quiet of her cramped apartment, the dawn was beginning to bleed through the grimy windowpanes, painting the room in hues of bruised purple and hesitant grey. Sleep had been a distant, unattainable luxury, chased away by the relentless churn of questions. Who was responsible for this malfeasance? And more importantly, how did it connect to her own suffocating debt?

She reread the entries, her brow furrowed in concentration. The names were unfamiliar, the accounts obscure, yet the sheer volume of the discrepancies was staggering. Large sums were siphoned off, disguised as maintenance fees, consulting services, or inflated supply orders. It was a meticulously crafted web of deceit, designed to fool the casual observer, but Sarah, stripped bare by her own financial ruin, had developed an almost pathological attention to detail. Every misplaced comma, every rounded figure, screamed of intent.

A shiver traced its way down her spine, not from the chill of the morning, but from a dawning, terrifying realization. The anonymous payments. Mr. Abernathy. His sudden, almost impossibly timed generosity had been a balm to her fractured spirit, a lifeline thrown when she was drowning. But what if it hadn't been generosity at all? What if it had been a carefully orchestrated act, a way to quiet her, to divert her attention while the true architects of this scheme continued their work, or perhaps, to test her complicity? The thought was a bitter pill to swallow. She had clung to the hope that there was a benevolent force at play, a guardian angel in the guise of a wealthy benefactor. Now, the angel’s wings seemed to be shadowed by something far more sinister.
