The air in the crumbling marketplace hung thick with the dust of forgotten commerce and the gnawing silence of what was lost. Elara clutched the worn leather of her satchel, its contents—a scroll of cryptic symbols, a half-eaten apple, and a desperate hope—feeling impossibly heavy. Beside her, Kael moved with the coiled tension of a predator, his gaze sweeping the desolate stalls, his hand never far from the hilt of his scarred sword. Their alliance, if it could be called that, was a brittle thing, born of necessity rather than camaraderie.
“This place… it reeks of desperation,” Kael murmured, his voice a low rumble that seemed to scrape against the stillness. He kicked at a discarded clay pot, its fragments scattering like broken promises. “Not the kind that fuels courage, but the kind that festers.”
Elara flinched inwardly. His words, though blunt, held a truth she couldn’t deny. The vibrant energy that had once pulsed through their world, the very essence of existence, had been leached away, leaving behind a hollow echo. The sky, once a canvas of shifting elemental hues, was now a uniform, oppressive grey. The laughter of children, once punctuated by the playful dance of fire sprites or the gentle caress of wind wisps, was replaced by hushed, fearful whispers.
