As they ascended the peaks, Elara and Kael faced trials designed by the guardian. Each trial tested their understanding and respect for the elements, forcing them to confront their own weaknesses and biases.
The air thinned with each upward step, biting at exposed skin like a thousand tiny needles. Elara’s lungs burned, a dull ache that mirrored the gnawing uncertainty in her gut. Beside her, Kael moved with a grim, unyielding rhythm, his strides long and sure, a stark contrast to her own heaving breaths. The mountain, a colossal sentinel of jagged rock and eternal ice, seemed to absorb all sound, leaving only the rasp of their breathing and the crunch of their boots on the frozen scree.
They had been climbing for what felt like an eternity. The world below had long since faded into a hazy, indistinct memory, a place of dust and despair from which they had fled. Here, at the roof of the world, the silence was profound, almost deafening. It was a silence that pressed in, expectant, as if the mountain itself held its breath, waiting for them to prove themselves worthy.
The prophecy spoke of trials, of tests designed by the Ancient Guardian to weed out the unworthy, to ensure that only those with true reverence for the elements could reclaim them. Elara had studied the fragmented texts, deciphered the ancient script, but the reality of it was far more visceral, far more terrifying than any parchment could convey.
