The Mirror of Conformity
Elara confronts the Conformist, a foil representing societal pressures. This character’s outward success masks an inner void, highlighting the hollowness of mere compliance.
The air in the town square felt thick, like honey that had sat too long in the sun. It clung to my skin, heavy and sweet, but with an undercurrent of something stale. I was supposed to be meeting Clara, or as I privately thought of her, the Mirror. She was polished, perfect, and reflected back exactly what everyone else wanted to see. Today, she’d invited me for tea at that little café with the striped awning, the one where the teacups were always chipped in the same, elegant place.
"Elara, darling!" Clara’s voice trilled, a sound like tiny bells being shaken too vigorously. She was already seated at a small table, her perfectly coiffed hair catching the sunlight, her dress a pristine shade of forget-me-not blue. She gestured to the empty chair opposite her, a practiced, graceful movement. "I was beginning to think you’d gotten lost in one of your daydreams."
I slid into the chair, the worn wood cool beneath my fingertips. "Hello, Clara. I'm not lost. Just… observing."
