Chapter 4
The First Authentic Breath
Inspired by the journal, Elara stops performing and starts exploring her inner world. She tentatively voices her unique thoughts, finding small joys in authenticity.
The pages of the journal lay open on my lap, their edges softened by time, the ink of forgotten thoughts a delicate script against the aged paper. It was like holding a whisper from a distant relative, a story I hadn't known I was waiting to hear. For so long, I’d been trying to mimic the voices around me, to smooth my rough edges until I fit neatly into the molds everyone else seemed to occupy with such ease. But the journal, with its scribbled poems and whimsical drawings of creatures with too many eyes and flowers that bloomed in impossible colors, felt like a secret language I was beginning to understand. It didn’t demand I be louder, or quieter, or more like anyone else. It simply *was*. And in its quiet existence, it gave me permission to just *be*.
A small, tentative hum started in my chest, a melody I hadn’t noticed before. It wasn’t the forced, bright tune I’d sometimes try to sing along with the world, but something softer, more resonant, like the quiet vibration of a plucked string. I traced a drawing of a bird with wings like stained glass. Where did such a creature come from? Not from the neatly trimmed hedges of our neighborhood, or the predictable chirping of the sparrows in the park. This bird was born of a different sky, a different kind of thought. And for the first time, I didn’t feel the urge to dismiss it as silly or impossible. Instead, a tiny seed of curiosity, no bigger than a speck of dust, began to unfurl.
“What are you looking at so intently?”
