The worn pages of the journal had become Elara’s closest companions, their faded ink a language she was slowly, beautifully, learning to understand. For so long, she had heard only the cacophony of the outside world, a relentless chorus of shoulds and musts that drowned out the delicate hum of her own soul. But within these brittle leaves, a different kind of sound resided – the gentle murmur of a voice that had once been as real, as vibrant, as any other. Her voice.
It wasn't a sudden revelation, no lightning strike of understanding. It was more like the slow unfurling of a fern, each frond revealing itself with quiet grace. The words in the journal spoke of feelings that mirrored her own, of a yearning for a space where the air didn't feel so thick with unspoken rules, where laughter wasn't always measured. The drawings, too, were a revelation. Swirls of colour that defied logic, creatures that existed only in the realm of pure imagination, and landscapes that shimmered with an inner light. These weren't the neat, ordered pictures expected; they were wild, untamed expressions, and they felt… familiar.
Elara traced a finger over a drawing of a bird with feathers like stained glass, its wings outstretched as if catching the sun. She remembered sketching similar birds in the margins of her schoolbooks, only to hastily erase them, embarrassed by their unconventional beauty. The journal’s creator had not erased. They had celebrated.
