The silence was the worst. It wasn't the peaceful quiet of an empty building, but a heavy, expectant hush, punctuated by the faintest scuffles and groans that clawed at Maya’s nerves. Each sound was a phantom limb, a reminder of what they had lost, of who they had lost. Chloe. The name echoed in the hollow spaces of Maya’s mind, a mournful dirge. Chloe, who had laughed so readily, whose eyes had sparkled with an almost reckless joy just hours ago. Now, she was a husk, a predator, a silent scream trapped behind vacant, milky eyes.

Maya pressed herself against the cold, grimy wall of the hallway, her breath catching in her throat. Beside her, Ben’s knuckles were white where he gripped the rusted pipe he’d found, his gaze fixed on the end of the corridor. The flickering beam of his flashlight danced across peeling paint and overturned lockers, a frantic heartbeat in the encroaching darkness. The air was thick with the cloying scent of decay, a constant, nauseating perfume that clung to everything.

“She’s… she’s still out there,” Ben whispered, his voice a rough rasp. It wasn’t a question, but a statement of grim, undeniable fact. They had seen her, at the edge of their vision, a shambling silhouette against the dim light filtering from a broken window. Chloe, or what remained of her, was a constant, terrifying presence, a macabre monument to their failed escape.
