The village bell’s urgent clang, a sound usually reserved for the fiercest storms or the most joyous celebrations, now echoed with a chilling finality. It had rung not three times, but a frantic, insistent cascade, each peal a hammer blow against the fragile peace of Iluwa. Tonight. The Harvest Moon, a celestial orb that usually brought with it a sense of abundance and reflection, had decided to arrive unannounced, its golden face already beginning its ascent, painting the sky in hues of amber and rose. And with its premature appearance, the Night of the Curse, a specter that had haunted Iluwa for half a century, was to begin. Tonight.

A collective gasp swept through the village square, a sound that was swiftly followed by a frantic scramble. Doors that had stood open moments before now slammed shut, their heavy timbers barring the imagined horrors that lurked beyond. Parents, their faces etched with a terror passed down through generations, scooped up their children, their hurried footsteps a frantic rhythm against the packed earth. The bustling marketplace, moments ago alive with the chatter of evening preparations, emptied as if a sudden gale had swept through, leaving behind only stillness and the rising dread.

In that moment, as the last vestiges of daylight surrendered to the encroaching twilight, a quiet resolve settled within her. It was a feeling that had been simmering for years, fueled by her grandmother’s hushed warnings and the traveler’s enigmatic words. Tonight, the silence would be broken. Tonight, the questions would have answers. “I will not hide tonight,” she whispered, the words barely a breath against the growing stillness. “I will find out whether this curse is real… or whether someone has been fooling us all.”
