Chapter 7
The First Crack
Corbin finds a personal item belonging to one of the missing in an unexpected, non-haunted location. This discovery shatters the supernatural narrative, pointing towards deliberate human intervention. He realizes the ghost stories are a convenient smokescreen.
Detective Miles Corbin stood at the edge of the woods, the late afternoon sun bleeding through the skeletal branches of October, painting the decaying leaves in hues of rust and blood. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and pine, a smell that usually soothed him, but today it felt cloying, suffocating. He’d been in Blackwood Creek for three days, three days of hushed whispers, averted gazes, and the suffocating weight of a town that seemed to hold its breath. The disappearances, three in as many weeks, were starting to feel less like isolated incidents and more like a pattern, a dark tapestry being woven thread by thread.
Sheriff Brody Hayes had been all smiles and handshakes, a picture of rural helpfulness. He’d offered Corbin the use of a cramped office in the station, a thermos of lukewarm coffee, and a steady stream of theories that all conveniently led to the abandoned Blackwood Asylum. "Haunted," Hayes had declared with a theatrical shudder, his eyes glinting with an unnerving amusement. "Place has a bad reputation. Always has. Folks say the spirits of the patients… they lash out."
Corbin, a man who dealt in tangible evidence, not spectral apparitions, had listened with a practiced patience, his analytical mind already sifting through the folklore, searching for the bedrock of truth beneath the layers of superstition. He’d spent hours poring over old newspaper clippings in the dusty town archives, guided by the reclusive historian, Eleanor Vance. Vance, a woman as sharp as broken glass beneath her quiet exterior, had been hesitant at first, a fortress of unspoken knowledge. But Corbin's persistence had chipped away at her defenses, revealing fragments of Blackwood’s troubled past, a history intertwined with the asylum’s grim legacy.
