The air within the asylum’s main hall hung thick and cloying, a miasma of dust, decay, and something far more unsettling. Detective Miles Corbin’s flashlight beam cut through the gloom, illuminating peeling paint, overturned furniture, and the ghostly outlines of forgotten lives. He’d followed the trail of breadcrumbs—or rather, the trail of terror—to this decaying monument of despair, and now, standing in its echoing heart, he felt the weight of every missing person, every unanswered question, pressing down on him.
Across from him, silhouetted against a grimy window, stood the architect of this macabre theatre. Sheriff Brody Hayes. The man who had, with oily charm and calculated misdirection, guided Corbin’s investigation, all while orchestrating its dark conclusion. The realization settled in Corbin’s gut like a cold stone. It wasn't a ghost, not a supernatural entity. It was human. Grotesquely, tragically human.
“You… you did this?” Corbin’s voice was a rough whisper, the sound swallowed by the vastness of the hall. His hand instinctively went to his sidearm, the familiar weight a small comfort against the rising tide of dread.
