Chapter 7
A Mother's Warning
The journal reveals her mother's fear, her attempts to protect the family from a past transgression. The secret involves a debt, a promise, and a dangerous entanglement.
The worn leather of the journal felt strangely familiar beneath my fingertips, a comforting weight in the suffocating stillness of my mother's study. Dust motes danced in the slivers of light that pierced the heavy velvet curtains, illuminating the scene of devastation that had become my world. It had been weeks, or perhaps months, since I’d last seen this room bathed in normal light, since laughter had echoed within these walls. Words like ‘unease,’ ‘shadow,’ and ‘danger’ began to appear, laced with a desperate plea for normalcy that felt achingly naive now.
“He watches,” one entry read, the ink bleeding slightly as if a tear had fallen onto the page. “I see him. Always at the periphery. Arthur dismisses it as my imagination, but I know. I feel it in my bones. This debt… it has a long memory.”
