Chapter 5
The Weaver's Gaze
The killer, dubbed 'The Weaver' by the media, strikes again. Another victim, another cryptic clue left behind, each one a taunt directed specifically at Elara.
The air in the abandoned warehouse hung thick with the metallic tang of decay and something else, something sharp and acrid that prickled my nostrils. It was the scent of spilled secrets, of lives abruptly extinguished. Detective Miller, his face etched with a weariness that seemed to have settled deep into his bones, gestured for me to stay back. But I couldn’t. Not anymore. My feet, guided by a desperate, unyielding pull, carried me forward, past the yellow tape, past the hushed murmurs of uniformed officers.
This was the third. The third life snuffed out in a tableau of deliberate, chilling artistry. The victim, a man named Thomas Albright, lay sprawled on the concrete floor, his eyes wide with a terror that no amount of water could wash away. “He calls himself ‘The Weaver,’ Elara,” Miller said, his voice a low rumble, barely audible above the distant wail of sirens. He didn’t have to tell me. The media had christened him, their sensational headlines painting a ghastly portrait of the killer who left his macabre calling card. But for me, he was more than a name. He was a shadow that had consumed my world, a phantom that left me with the phantom ache of a life I could no longer grasp.
