Chapter 9
Whispers in the Herd
Sky Eyes communes with the bison, hearing their pain and their ancient wisdom. Their spirits are fading, mirroring the land's decay.
The ochre dust swirled around Sky Eyes’ ankles, a familiar caress from the earth that had cradled her dreams since birth. She stood at the edge of the vast, breathing expanse, her gaze lost in the undulating sea of fur and muscle that was the bison herd. The midday sun, a benevolent eye in the boundless blue, cast long shadows that stretched like ancient fingers across the plains. Yet, beneath the warmth, a chill had begun to seep into the very marrow of her bones, a disquiet that echoed the troubled whispers she now heard.
It was not the low rumble of contentment, nor the sharp snort of alertness that filled her ears today. It was a symphony of sorrow, a muted lament sung on the breath of a dying wind. She closed her eyes, her senses unfurling like the petals of a desert flower, reaching out to the collective consciousness of the herd. Each bison was a note in this mournful melody, their pain a discordant hum that vibrated through her soul. She felt their weakness, the dull ache in their joints, the gnawing emptiness in their bellies, the pervasive lethargy that clung to them like a shroud.
Their spirits, once vibrant flames dancing in the wind, were now embers, fading and flickering. She saw it in the slump of their massive shoulders, the dullness in their liquid brown eyes, the listlessness with which they moved, their ancient migratory paths becoming tangled skeins of confusion. The earth beneath them, too, seemed to sigh with weariness. The grasses, usually a lush carpet of emerald and gold, were brittle and pale, their roots grasping at parched soil. The streams, once silver veins pulsing with life, trickled weakly, their waters tasting of dust and despair.
