Chapter 6
Swift Arrow's Doubt
Swift Arrow, loyal friend, watches the changes with a heavy heart. He trusts Sky Eyes but fears the unknown path she must tread.
The prairie wind, a constant companion, felt different now, carrying a mournful sigh instead of its usual boisterous song. Swift Arrow, his gaze fixed on the distant, lumbering shapes of the bison, felt a knot tighten in his gut. He had ridden with Sky Eyes since they were children, their laughter echoing across these same plains. He trusted her with his life, felt the truth in her every word, yet the path she was now forging… it was a path of shadows, of whispers he couldn’t quite decipher.
He watched as a cow, her flank gaunt, stumbled, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Her calf nudged her, a silent plea that went unanswered. A chill, unrelated to the setting sun, traced its way down Swift Arrow’s spine. He had seen sickness before, the occasional weakling succumbing to the harshness of life, but this was different. This was a sickness that clung to the very air, a blight that seemed to dim the vibrant spirit of the herd.
He remembered Sky Eyes, her eyes wide with a fear he’d rarely seen, recounting her vision by the ancient cottonwood. The swirling colors, the guttural cries, the sense of a world unraveling – it had shaken him, even as he tried to offer her the steady reassurance of his presence. He was a hunter, his strength lay in the swiftness of his arrow, the keenness of his eye. He understood the tangible threats: the wolf packs, the harsh winters, the scarcity of water. But this… this was a foe he couldn't draw a bead on, a danger that seeped from the earth itself.
