Iron Hand's Grasp

The outsiders arrive, their machines scarring the land. Iron Hand, with eyes fixed on profit, dismisses the old ways and the bison's plight.

The horizon, once a seamless tapestry of ochre and gold, was now rent by jagged lines of dark metal. They rose like skeletal fingers from the earth, clawing at the sky, their guttural roar drowning out the wind’s gentle song. Sky Eyes watched from the crest of a low hill, her heart a heavy stone in her chest. The machines, an alien intrusion, churned the sacred soil, their metal teeth tearing at the roots of the prairie grasses. Dust, thick and acrid, billowed in their wake, a suffocating shroud that clung to her skin and stung her eyes.

Beside her, Swift Arrow shifted his weight, his gaze as troubled as hers. “They come like a storm, Sky Eyes,” he murmured, his voice barely audible above the din. “But a storm that does not pass.”

She nodded, unable to speak. The air itself felt wrong, heavy with an unnatural tension. The bison, usually her solace, were restless. A low murmur of unease rippled through the herd grazing in the valley below, their massive heads lifted, their dark eyes wide with an animal apprehension that mirrored her own. The sickness, a slow creeping dread, had already thinned their ranks, and now this… this violation.
