Chapter 20
Where the Bison Tread
The land breathes again. The bison's hooves echo with renewed life, and Sky Eyes, forever linked to their spirit, watches over the peaceful plains.
The land breathed again, a deep, resonant sigh that rippled through the newly green grasses. Sky Eyes stood at the edge of the rise, her gaze sweeping across the vast expanse. The sun, a benevolent eye in the sapphire dome of the sky, cast long, dancing shadows that stretched and contracted with the gentle sway of the prairie. Below, the bison moved, a living tapestry of ochre and brown, their low grunts and the rhythmic thump of their hooves a symphony of renewed life. It was the sound she had yearned for, the heartbeat of the plains returned to its rightful cadence.
A soft breeze, carrying the scent of wild sage and damp earth, caressed her cheek. It felt like a familiar hand, a gentle reassurance. She closed her eyes, letting the sensation wash over her. The whispers, once frantic and fearful, were now calm, a murmur of contentment, of belonging. They spoke of the land’s healing, of the deep roots finding purchase once more, of the water, clean and pure, flowing freely. They spoke of the bison, their strength returning, their ancient migration paths reawakening.
Elder Willow’s words echoed in her mind, a gentle cadence learned over seasons of watching and listening. “The spirit of the plains,” he had said, his voice like the rustle of dry leaves, “is not a thing to be conquered, child. It is a thing to be understood, to be honored. When we forget this, the land weeps, and the herds falter.” She had seen the weeping, felt the faltering, and the memory of that sickness, that pervasive unease, lingered like a phantom chill even in the warmth of the present sun.
