Chapter 18
The Spirit's Plea
Sky Eyes channels the collective spirit of the bison and the earth, her voice a conduit for their plea for balance and healing.
The air thrummed with a silence that was louder than any roar, a held breath of the plains. Sky Eyes stood at the edge of the great herd, the setting sun bleeding across the vast canvas of the sky, painting it in hues of bruised plum and molten gold. Her heart beat in time with the slow, steady rhythm of thousands of hooves, a cadence that had been the lullaby of her life. A tremor ran through Sky Eyes’ own body, an echo of the fear that rippled through the collective consciousness of the animals.
Elder Willow’s words, spoken in the hushed reverence of their sacred grove, replayed in her mind: "The land remembers, child. And when it weeps, the herds weep with it." Sky Eyes had felt the land’s sorrow, a dull ache beneath her feet, a subtle bitterness in the taste of the wind. But tonight, it was more than an ache. It was a cry, a raw, unvarnished pain that clawed at her soul.
